» PALMA DE MAJORCA (ENGLISH)

Capital of the Autonomous Community. It concentrates the 50% of the island’s population. It’s situated on a bay 20 kilometres wide and 25 kilometres long. The origin of the present settlement was a talayotic village with very strong links with the sea. The toponym dates from Roman times. The Arabs, in the 10th century, erected Medina Mayurka walls, and in 1229 it was conquered by king James I, who provided it with a municipality that extended over all the island.

The beginning of the tourist phenomenon in the second half of the twentieth century changes the city and the whole island’s appearance, becoming an appealing spot for visitors and a center of sociological exchange of cultures. The travellers who arrive to Palma can gaze at a scene containing all the sights they must visit, as Bellver Castle, La Lonja (Trade Exchange Market of the 15th century), Almudaina’s Palace (the Spanish queen and king’s official summer residence) and the Cathedral. Moreover, we also recommend you a walk around the City Hall building, Santa Eulalia’s church, Gran Hotel, Plaza Mayor, Plaza Olivar among others. Our licensed tourist guides can show around. Let’s do it! MONUMENTAL PALMA, MODERN ART IN PALMA, PANORAMIC PALMA
